What safety precautions should I follow when changing the needle?

Always turn off the machine before changing the needle, as accidentally pressing the foot controller could start the machine and cause injury. Only use sewing machine needles designed for home use, and never sew with a bent needle as it can easily break and cause injury. Before replacing the needle, place fabric or paper under the presser foot to prevent the needle from falling into the hole in the needle plate.
