What type of batteries should I use and how should I maintain them?

Use alkaline disposable D (LR20-1.5V) batteries and never mix old and new batteries or different battery types. Always remove batteries if the product will not be used for a month or more, as batteries left in the unit may leak and cause damage. When the product ceases to operate satisfactorily, change the batteries. (Page 15)
