What does the Em Heat setting do, and how does it affect the compressor?
When the System switch is set to Em Heat, the thermostat controls emergency and auxiliary heat only, and the compressor is locked out entirely. The L terminal is also powered continuously whenever the thermostat is set to Em Heat. This mode is used when the heat pump itself cannot provide sufficient heating. (Pages 2, 10)
