What happens if HP cannot repair or replace my defective HP Deskjet 2300 under warranty?

If HP is unable to repair or replace a defective product covered by its warranty, HP will refund the purchase price for the product within a reasonable time after being notified of the defect. Note that HP has no obligation to repair, replace, or refund until the customer returns the defective product to HP. (Page 2)
