Is it safe to store items in cabinets located above the cooktop surface?

The manual warns that cabinet storage above the surface units should be avoided to eliminate the risk of burns or fire caused by reaching over heated elements. If cabinet storage must be provided, installing a range hood that projects horizontally a minimum of 5" beyond the bottom of the cabinets can help reduce the risk. (Page 2)
