What are privacy codes and do I need them to communicate?
Privacy codes (CTCSS or DCS) help reduce interference from other users on a channel. To successfully communicate using a privacy code, both radios must be tuned to the same channel and the same privacy code system with the same privacy code number. However, privacy code 00 allows all signals to be heard without filtering on channels set to 00 on both systems.
