How do I safely clean spilled sugar or melted plastic from the cooktop surface?

Sugar, sugar syrup, milk, tomato spills, and melted plastic or foil require immediate removal because failure to do so can permanently damage the surface. While the surface is still hot, use a razor blade scraper held at a 30-degree angle to push the spill off the heated area — wear an oven mitt for protection. After the surface has cooled, remove any residue and apply glass ceramic cooktop cleaner. (Page 20)
