How do I check if my ink cartridges are low or expended?

You can check ink status by looking at the ink out lights on the control panel: a flashing light means the cartridge is low and you can continue printing, while a red light means the cartridge is expended and must be replaced. You can also check cartridge status in Windows by double-clicking the product icon in the taskbar and clicking the Details button.
