How do I defrost the freezer compartment safely?

Defrost whenever frost on the wall of the ice tray compartment becomes 1/4 inch thick. Never use a sharp or metallic instrument to remove frost, as it may damage the cooling coils and void the warranty — use a plastic scraper instead. Set the temperature control to OFF, remove food and ice trays, and allow a few hours for defrosting; you can pour warm (not boiling) water on the frosted area to speed the process.
