How do I safely handle and remove the hard drive to avoid damage or data loss?

Before removing the hard drive, shut down the computer fully — not just Sleep or Hibernation — disconnect power and all external devices, remove the battery, and then remove the hard drive cover. While handling the drive, avoid touching the connector, keep it on at least one inch of shock-proof foam, avoid dropping it, and place it in a static-proof bag after removal. Never expose the drive to magnetic fields, temperature extremes, or liquids. (Page 40, 42-43)
