1

How do I adjust the handle for better comfort?

Adjust upper and lower handles separately or together depending on how many positions you wish to change, loosening bolts until the position is locked in. Be sure controls pivot freely as over tightening can obstruct blade brake engagement.

2

What are the key maintenance intervals for my craftsmen lawn mower?

It's recommended to check loose fasteners and clean drive wheels every use. Sharpen/renew blades at least once a year or after prolonged use in sandy soil, and replace spark plug annually.

3

What should I do if my lawn mower starts flooding?

Excessive priming can cause flooding. Stop trying to start the engine, wait a few minutes before restarting without repriming or risk flood damage.

4

How do I properly remove the blade for maintenance?

Disconnect the spark plug wire and turn the mower on its side, ensuring that the air filter is up. Place a wooden block between the blade and mower housing to prevent accidental rotation while removing the blade bolt using a 9/16" box or open-end wrench.

5

How do I adjust the lawn mower cutting height?

Adjusting the cutting height requires squeezing the wheel adjuster toward the wheel, then raising or lowering it to your desired position. Ensure all wheels are in the same setting for consistent cut heights. Medium setting is best for most lawns.

6

How often should I change the oil on my lawn mower?

Change the engine oil after the first two hours of use and every 25 hours thereafter, or at least once a year if not used for more than 25 operating hours. Check the oil level before each use.

Use 20 ozs. of oil. For type and grade of oil to use, see "ENGINE" in Customer Responsibilities section of this manual.

WARNING: Experience indicates that alcohol blended fuels (calted gasohol or using ethano_ or methanol) can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage. To avoid engine problems, the fuel system should be emptied before storage of 30 days or longer. Drain the fuel tank, start the engine and let it run until fuel tines and carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuel next season. See Storage Instructions for additional information. If you do flood engine, wait a few minutes before attempting to start and do not repeat priming steps. MOWING TiPS
  • FIG. 8

o Under certain conditions, such as very tafi grass, itmay be necessary to raise the height of cut to reduce pushing effort and to keep from overloading the engine and leaving ctumps of grass clippings.

    MULCHING MOWING TIPS

IMPORTANT: FOR BEST PERFORMANCE, KEEP MOWER HOUStNG FREE OF BUILT-UP GRASS AND

TRASH. CLEAN UNDERSIDE OF MOWER HOUSING AFTER EACH USE. SEE "CLEANING" IN CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES SECT_ONOFTH1S MANUAL

, For extremely heavy cutting, reduce the width of cut and raise the rear of the lawn mower housing one (1) wheel adjuster setting higher than the front for better discharge of grass.

  • The special mulching blade will recut the grass clippings many times and reduce them in size so that as they fal! onto the lawn they wilt disperse into the grass and not be noticed. Also, the mulched grass will biodegrade quickly to provide nutrients for the lawn. Always mulch with your highest engine (blade) speed as this will provide the best recurring action of the blades.
  • o For better grass bagging and most cutting conditions, the engine speed should be set in the fast (_r__)position.
  • o When using a rear discharge lawn mower in moist, lneavy grass, clumps of cut grass may not enter the
  • grass catcher. Reduce ground speed (pushing speed) and/or run the Iawn mower over thearea a second time.

    • Avoid cutting your lawn when itis wet. Wet grass tends to form clumps and interferes with the mulching action. The best time to mow your lawn is the early afternoon. At this time the grass has dried and the newly cut area will not be exposed to the direct sun.

Ifatrail of grass clippings is left onthe right side of a rear discharge lawn mower, mow in a clockwise direction with a smatt overlap to collect the clippings on the next pass.

, Keep top of engine around starter clear and clean of grass clippings and chaff. This will help engine airflow and extend engine tife.

,, For best results, adjust the lawn mower cutting height so that the tawn mower cuts off only the top one-third of the grass blades (See Fig. 8). If the lawn is overgrown it will be necessary to raise the height of cut to reduce pushing effort and to keep from overloading the engine and leaving clumps of mulched grass. For extremely heavy mulching, reduce your width of cut, mow stowty and raise the rear of the lawn mower one wheel =adjuster setting higher than the front.

o Pores incloth grass catchers can become filled with dirt

and dust with use and catchers wit! collect tess grass. To prevent this, regularly hose catchers off with water and let dry before using.

...............,,..................Ce_ain types of :grass and grass.conditions.may re...... : quire that an area be mulched a second time to completely hide the clippings. When doing a second cut, mow across or perpendicuiar to the first cut path.

,, Change your cutting pattern from week to week. Mow no_lhto south one week then change to east to west the next week. This wilt help prevent matting and graining of the lawn.
