How do I prevent cloudiness on glassware?

Cloudiness on glassware, called etching, is permanent and caused by a combination of soft water and too much detergent. To prevent this, use less detergent if you have soft water and wash glassware in the shortest cycle that will get them clean. You can also lower the water heater temperature if it exceeds 150°F.
