What is the proper way to add liquid chlorine bleach to my wash?

Always measure liquid chlorine bleach and do not guess. Never pour bleach directly onto the load. Instead, pour measured liquid chlorine bleach around the agitator to avoid damaging clothing. Do not let bleach splash, drip, or run down into the washer basket. Undiluted bleach will damage any fabric it touches and the damage may not appear until several washings later.
