How do I safely start the engine on the TB30R?

Insert the key into the ignition switch module, place the PTO lever in the disengaged (OFF) position, and engage the parking brake. Move the throttle/choke control all the way forward into the choke position, then turn the ignition key clockwise to the START position — do not hold the key in the START position for longer than ten seconds. After the engine starts, release the key and move the throttle to the FAST position to deactivate the choke. (Page 19)

2

What should I do to prepare the TB30R for off-season storage?

You must either completely empty the fuel system or treat the gasoline with a fuel stabilizer to prevent gum deposits from forming in the carburetor. If emptying the system, drain fuel into an approved container outdoors, run the engine until it falters, then use the choke to exhaust all remaining fuel from the carburetor. Additionally, clean and lubricate the tractor thoroughly and store it in a dry, clean area away from corrosive materials such as fertilizer. (Page 25-26)

3

How do I use the Reverse Caution Mode on the TB30R?

Turn the key from the NORMAL MOWING (Green) position to the REVERSE CAUTION MODE (Yellow) position on the key switch module, then press the orange triangular REVERSE PUSH BUTTON at the top right corner of the module — the red indicator light will illuminate when activated. Once active, the tractor can be driven in reverse with the cutting blade (PTO) engaged. Always look down and behind while backing, and do not use this mode when children or others are nearby. (Page 20)

4

What is the recommended maintenance schedule for the TB30R?

Before each use, check the engine oil level. Every 25 hours, clean and re-oil the air filter foam pre-cleaner (if equipped), lube front axles and rims, clean engine cooling fins, and lubricate the steering rack and pinion. Every 100 hours, replace the air filter element, change the engine oil and oil filter (if equipped), check the spark plug condition and gap, and replace the fuel filter. (Page 22)

5

How do I connect the battery cables correctly on the TB30R?

Always connect the POSITIVE (Red) wire to its terminal first, followed by the NEGATIVE (Black) wire when installing the battery. When removing the battery, disconnect the NEGATIVE (Black) wire first, followed by the POSITIVE (Red) wire. Reversing the connections could change the polarity and result in damage to the engine's alternating system. (Page 14)

6

What causes uneven cutting on the TB30R and how do I fix it?

An uneven cut is typically caused by a deck that is not leveled properly, a dull blade, or uneven tire pressure. To correct the issue, perform the Leveling the Deck adjustment, sharpen or replace the blade, and check the tire pressure in all four tires. The front of the deck should be between 0" (level) and 1/4" lower than the rear of the deck. (Page 31)

Operator’s Manual Form No. 769-11837 (October 7, 2016) Important Safety Guidelines ..................... 2 Assembly and Setup ........................................... 7 Controls and Operation .......................................10 Product Care ..........................................................14 Note: This Operator’s Manual covers multiple models. Features may vary by model. Not all features in this manual are applicable to all models. Read the safety guidelines before operating the machine. Failure to comply with these instructions may result in personal injury. Page 4: Slope Operation A missing or damaged discharge cover can cause blade contact or thrown object injuries. Be aware of slopes and stop the blade when crossing them to avoid loss of control and tip-over. Page 5: Service Children Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to the presence of children. Children are often attracted to the machine and do not understand the dangers. Use extreme caution around children. Important Safety Information and Assembly Instructions for Riding Mower Product: READ MANUAL BEFORE USE! This product comes with safety symbols that need to be understood. It's crucial to read and follow all instructions in the manual before attempting assembly and operation. Symbols on the machine indicate potential dangers, so pay attention to them. DANGER - Gasoline is flammable. Allow the engine to cool for at least two minutes before refueling. WARNING - Carbon monoxide is deadly. Never run the engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated area. Assembly requires care. Tighten the shoulder bolt and lock nut using specific wrenches, then remove the pedestal cap mount hex screw from the steering console. Keep the screw for later use. Installing the mulch plug and deck chute is essential. Don't operate the tractor without them installed. The rear engine cover must be connected correctly, with equal tire pressure maintained at all times. The controls and features are located on the tractor, including the clutch/brake pedal, speed control & parking brake lever, fuel level indicator, ignition switch module, shift lever, fuel fill cap, throttle/choke lever, deck lift lever, cup holder, PTO (blade engage) lever, and oil fill cap. Read all safety rules and instructions before operating the machine. The shift lever is situated on the control panel, beneath the seat, and the Fuel Lever Indicator is located below the seat on the left side of the tractor. This component has three positions: Forward, Reverse, and Neutral. Engaging the parking brake is crucial for safety; failure to do so can result in serious injury or death. To engage the parking brake safely: Fully depress the clutch-brake pedal and hold it down with your foot. Remove objects that could be thrown by the blades. Stopping the Engine: Shut off the engine and remove the key to minimize the risk of damage to your lawn. WARNING: If you strike a foreign object, stop the hot exhaust from your tractor's running engine immediately. Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine if necessary. Mulching: Once activated (indicator light ON), the tractor can be driven in reverse with the cutting blade engaged. A mulch kit has been supplied with your unit. Always look down and behind before and while backing to avoid accidents. Maintenance & Adjustments: Close the oil drain valve by rotating it clockwise, then reinstall the cap. Refill the engine with new motor oil as instructed in the Engine Owner's Manual. Lubricate the steering rack and pinion gear under the front of the unit every 25 hours of operation or once per season. Approximately 10 psi for rear tires and 14 psi for front tires can cause the brake to malfunction. Have your brakes properly adjusted by an authorized Troy-bilt Service Dealer. Off Season Storage: Drain the fuel from the tank, located on the left side of the engine, and may be attached with a tie strap. Never store lawn tractor indoors or in poorly ventilated areas where fuel fumes may reach an open flame. Removing the deck belt with the cutting deck still installed on the tractor can be tricky, but taking off the deck first makes it much easier. Then, you can change the deck belt and put the cutting deck back on. Be careful when jump-starting your mower's blades, though - never try to revive a damaged or frozen cutting blade. If that happens, turn off the engine, remove the battery, and make sure the vehicles aren't touching each other with their ignition keys off. Before removing any parts, be aware that some components require special tools (like an air/impact wrench) to change the tractor's drive belt. It might be a good idea to consult an authorized Troy-bilt Service Dealer or phone Customer Support for help on ordering a Service Manual. If your engine won't start, check if the PTO/Blade is engaged - simply place the blade engage lever in the disengaged (OFF) position. You can also look for a disconnected spark plug wire and reconnect it. If you're out of gas or have stale fuel, fill up with fresh, clean gasoline that's less than 30 days old. Some replacement parts include: - Drive Belt (Mowing Deck): 954-04318 - Deck Spindle Cutting Blade (30”): 918-04822A - Battery: 925-1707D - Fuel Tank Cap: 951-12179A (or 951-04366 for California) - Key Assembly: 625-05002 For attachments and accessories compatible with the Troy-bilt Lawn Tractor, check with your retailer or an authorized Service Dealer. Be aware that this model is not designed for ground-engaging attachments. Lastly, familiarize yourself with the emission control warranty statement on your outdoor equipment engine. In California, new engines must meet the State's stringent anti-smog standards, while in other states, 1997 and later model year equipment must adhere to U.S. regulations.
