1

What should I do if my dishwasher is not filling with water?

Ensure that the water supply valve (typically located under the kitchen sink) is open and check that the water supply line has no kinks or clogs. Also check whether a Delay Start is active, whether the previous wash cycle was completed, or whether the household water supply has been turned off. If the 'Check water supply' display lights up, these are the primary causes to investigate.

2

How do I adjust the water softener setting on my dishwasher?

Open the door, switch on the On/Off button, then hold down function key # and press the Start button until the display shows the water softener menu (•:0x). Release both buttons, then press function key 3 to select the desired setting based on your water hardness, and press the Start button to save. You can determine your water hardness using the test strip included with the dishwasher or by contacting your local water utility company.

3

How do I add rinse aid and how do I know when it needs refilling?

The dishwasher will illuminate the 'Add Rinse Aid' indicator on the display when the rinse aid is low. To refill, open the rinse aid dispenser (9*) by pressing on the latch, add liquid rinse aid until full without overfilling, then close the lid until it clicks. Wipe up any spills with a damp cloth and do not fill the rinse aid dispenser with detergent, as this will damage the dishwasher.

4

Is it safe to put knives and sharp utensils in the dishwasher, and how should they be loaded?

Yes, knives and sharp utensils can be placed in the dishwasher, but they must be loaded with edges down to reduce the risk of cut-type injuries. When using the silverware basket, place sharp utensils with handles up; however, the manual's warning specifically states to load knives with edges down and to keep children away from sharp utensils. Do not allow sharp items to damage the door seal during loading.

5

How do I use the Delay Start feature on my dishwasher?

Press the On/Off button, select a wash cycle, then press the Delay button from the wash cycle options until the displayed time matches your requirement — you can delay up to 24 hours in one-hour increments. Press the Start button to activate the Delay Start. To cancel, open the door, press the Delay button until 0:00 is shown on the display, then press Start to save.

6

What is the warranty coverage for the Bosch SHXM63WS5N dishwasher?

The dishwasher is covered by a 365-day limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from the date of purchase, plus a 30-day cosmetic defect warranty. Extended limited warranties include a 5-year warranty on electronics and dish racks, and a lifetime warranty against stainless steel rust-through on the inner liner and stainless steel door. To obtain warranty service, contact the nearest BSH authorized service center or call 1-800-944-2904.

8 Child Safety To reduce risk of injury, do not allow children to play in or on the dishwasher. When children become old enough to operate the appliance, it is the responsibility of the parents/legal guardians to ensure the children are instructed in safe practices by qualified persons. Proper Care and Maintenance

9 Warning

Risk Of Explosion!

Under certain conditions, hydrogen gas may be produced in a hot water system that has not been used for two weeks or more. Hydrogen gas is explosive. Before using a dishwasher that is connected to a hot water system that has been unused for two weeks or longer, turn on all hot water faucets and let the water flow from each for several minutes. This will release any accumulated hydrogen gas. As the gas is explosive, do not smoke or use an open flame during this time. Remove the dishwasher door to the washing compartment when removing an old dishwasher for service or discarding. To avoid floor damage and possible mold growth, do not allow wet areas to remain around or under the dishwasher. To avoid dishwasher damage, do not allow water to remain in your dishwasher systems through extended periods of freezing temperatures. Freezing temperatures can damage the water fill valve and potentially other components of your dishwasher.

Notice

It is highly recommended for the end user to become familiar with the procedure to shut off the incoming water supply and the procedure to shut off the incoming power supply. See the Installation Instructions or contact your installer for more information.

    Getting Started

+ Water softening system / special salt

Your water hardness level directly impacts your dishwasher's performance. Hard water will increase spotting and reduce detergent performance. Some dishwasher models are equipped with a water softener that uses a special salt to adjust the water hardness to obtain optimal performance. The dishwasher salt is added to the salt chamber 1Z located under the lower dishwasher rack. The amount of salt that is dispensed is based on your home water hardness. The home water hardness can be determined by using the water hardness test strip included in your manual set (or from your local hardware store). The dishwasher water softener setting must be adjusted to match your water hardness.

Instructions for use of included "Water Hardness Test Strip"

Only use salt designed for automatic dishwashers. Never use household water softener salt or table salt. Follow the instructions below for the included test strip. (If purchasing a different test strip, follow manufacturers instructions).

  • Run the water at the kitchen sink for 5 minutes.
  • Dip the end of the test strip with the colored squares into the tap water for 1 second and shake off excess water.
  • After one minute, compare the test strip to the chart below and determine the Dishwasher Water Softener setting.
  • Adjust the dishwasher Water Softener setting. See 'Adjusting the water softening system' on page 14
  • If required, add salt to the dishwasher salt chamber as shown. See Page 14
  • Adjusting the water softener settings

Using the test strip included with your dishwasher (Purchased test strips may have a different scale)

Getting Started 14 Adjusting the water softening system The amount of salt dispensed can be set from •:‹‹ to •:‹ˆ. Salt is not required at the set value •:‹‹. Set the softening system as follows:

  • Ask your local water utility
  • company for the water hardness value of your tap water.
  • Required setting can be found in
  • the water hardness table.
  • Open the door.
  • Switch on On/Off switch (.
  • Hold down function key # and
  • press Start button P until the display 8 indicates •:‹x (x can be any number).
  • Release both buttons.
  • The indicator of function key # flashes and the display 8 indicates •:‹…. Press function key 3 to select the desired setting.
  • Save the selected setting by
  • pressing the Start button P. The chosen setting has now been stored. Using special dishwasher salt As soon as the low salt indicator lights up on the digital display 8, salt should be topped off. Always refill with special salt immediately before switching on the appliance. This ensures that overrun special salt solution is immediately washed out and does not corrode the rinsing tub. Notice Detergent will destroy the water softening system! Never pour detergent into the salt dispenser. Top off the salt as follows:
  • Undo the screw plug on the
  • dispenser 1Z.
  • Fill the dispenser with water
  • (required only when switching on the appliance for the first time).
  • Add salt as illustrated (do not use
  • table salt, salt tablets or salt for use with whole house water softeners). The water is displaced and runs out. For more information about buying dishwasher salt, please contact customer service (1-800-944-2904). Using detergents with salt component If combined detergents with a salt component are used, special salt can usually be omitted up to a water hardness of 21° dH (37° fH, 26° Clarke, 3.7 mmol/l). If the water hardness is over 21° dH, salt must be used. Switching off low salt indicator / water softening system If the use of combined detergents with a salt component impairs the low salt indicator on the digital display 8, the low salt indicator can be switched off. Proceed as described under "Setting water softening system" and set the value to •:‹‹. The water softening system and salt refill indicator are now switched off.

    Rinse Aid

To achieve proper drying, always use a liquid rinse aid, even if your detergent contains a rinse aid or drying additive.

Note: The dishwasher indicates low rinse aid by turning on the Rinse Aid indicator on the display. If this indicator lights up, you need to refill the rinse aid dispenser by following the directions below.

    Adding rinse aid

Notice To avoid oversudsing or clogging, do not overfill the rinse aid dispenser. Wipe up any spills with a damp cloth.

  • Open the rinse aid dispenser
  • by pressing on the latch of the lid and pull it open.
  • Add liquid rinse aid to the
  • dispenser until it is full. Do not overfill.
  • Close the lid. Lid must be fully
  • closed until it clicks in order to seal.
  • Wipe up any excess rinse aid that
  • may have puddled when the dispenser reservoir is full.

The indicator light will go out a few moments after the dishwasher door is shut.

Notice Do not fill the rinse aid dispenser with detergent. Doing so will damage the dishwasher.

Setting the amount of rinse aid used

The amount of rinse aid dispensed can be set from 1 to 4. The factory setting is 3.

You should only change the setting if streaks remain on the dishes (lower the amount), or if dishes are not getting dry enough (increase the amount).

Dishware material Note: Before using your dishwasher for the first time, check the information in this section. Some items are not dishwasher-safe and should be hand washed; others require special loading.

Medium setting Medium/high setting High setting Highest setting

Setting | Amount Recommended ---|--- Aluminum | Colored anodized aluminum may fade over time. Minerals in your water may cause the aluminum to darken or spot. This can usually be removed with a soap-filled steel wool pad. China, Crystal, Stoneware | Some hand-painted utensils may discolor, fade or spot. Hand wash these utensils. Position fragile glassware so that it will not topple over or come in contact with other utensils during the wash cycle. Glass | Milk glass may discolor or become yellow. Non-stick Coatings | Apply a light coating of vegetable oil to non-stick surfaces after drying. Plastics | Make sure the plasticware is dishwasher-safe. Stainless Steel, Sterling Silver and Silver Plates | Load these so they do not come in contact with other metals, stainless steel dishwasher tub walls or the inner door.

    Loading the racks

For best dishwashing results, observe the following when loading the dishwasher:

    ■ Do not pre-wash items with loosely attached food soil. ■ Remove all food particles, bones, toothpicks and excessive grease. ■ Pre-treat items having burned-on, baked-on or starchy soils. ■ Load dishes in the dishwasher racks so the insides of bowls, pots and pans are facing the spray arms. ■ Avoid nesting and contact points between dishes. ■ Separate items of dissimilar metals. Use care to not block movement of the spray arms. ■ Only wash household dishware and kitchenware rated as dishwasher-safe.

Refer to the Dishware Materials section for more information about dishware suitability.

    Notice

To avoid dishwasher damage, do not load the dishwasher with paper products, plastic bags, packing materials or anything other than normal, dishwasher safe dishware and kitchenware.

    Loading the upper rack

Ensure items do not protrude through the bottom of the racks and block the spray arms.

Note: When pushing the upper rack into the dishwasher, push it until it stops against the back of the tub so the upper rack spray arm connects to the water supply at the back of the tub. Do not push racks in using the door.

    Loading the lower rack

Place large items in the lower rack. Load pots, pans and bowls upside down. Do not block the vent hole with tall baking sheets. Load these items on the right side of the dishwasher.

    Not Recommended

Acrylic — Crazing or small cracks throughout the acrylic may occur.

Adhesive-Joined Pieces — Adhesives that join materials such as plastic, wood, bone, steel, copper, tin, etc. may loosen.

Bone-Handled Utensils — Handles may separate.

Iron — Iron will rust. Hand wash and dry immediately.

Non-Dishware Items — Your dishwasher is intended for use in cleaning only standard household dishware and kitchenware.

Pewter, Brass, Bronze — These items will tarnish. Hand wash and dry immediately.

Tin — Tin will stain. Hand wash and dry immediately.

Wood — Wooden bowls, wooden utensils and utensils with wooden handles can crack, warp and lose their finish.

    9 Warning

    Risk Of Injury!

The sharp points and edges of knives and other sharp utensils can cause serious injury. Load knives and other sharp utensils with edges down. Do not allow children to handle or play near knives and sharp utensils. Long silverware basket Note: The silverware basket lid may also be folded downward in order to leave the basket open. This dishwasher is equipped with a silverware drawer that should accommodate most silverware loading needs. However, if you are washing while the silverware drawer has been removed, or with excess silverware, a silverware basket is also included. When loading the silverware basket you should avoid excessive contact points and nesting of similar items (allowing two spoons to rest inside one another). A good way to avoid excessive contact points is to load the silverware basket with the lids closed, inserting each piece of silverware into one of the individual slots as shown. Unloading the dishwasher When unloading the dishwasher, to prevent water from dripping onto dry dishes, unload the lower rack 9" first. Next, unload the silverware basket 1j followed by the upper rack 12, and then the third rack (if equipped). Note: Dishes are more likely to chip when unloading before cooling.

    Detergent

Use only detergent specifically designed for dishwashers. For best results, use fresh powdered dishwashing detergent or detergent tabs.

    Notice

To avoid dishwasher damage: ■ Do not use hand dishwashing products in your dishwasher. ■ Do not use too much detergent if your water is soft. Using too much detergent with soft water may cause etching in glassware and fine china.

This dishwasher uses less water than most, therefore, less detergent is required. With soft water, 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of detergent will clean most loads. The detergent dispenser cup has lines that measure detergent to 1 tablespoon (15 ml) and 1.75 tablespoons (25 ml). 3 tablespoons (45 ml) of detergent will completely fill the detergent dispenser.

Note: If you do not know the hardness of your water supply, use 15 ml of detergent. Increase the amount if necessary to the least amount required to get your kitchenware clean.

Use the measuring lines in the detergent dispenser cup as a guide to measure the amount of detergent recommended in the following table.

    | Wash Cycle | Hard Water/Heavy Soil | Medium Water/Medium Soil | Soft Water/Little Soil | |---|---|---|---| | Heavy | 3 tbsp (45 ml) | 3 tbsp (45 ml) | 1.75 - 3 tbsp (25 - 45 ml) | | Auto | 1.75 - 3 tbsp (25 - 45 ml) | 1.75 tbsp (25 ml) | 1 - 1.75 tbsp (15 - 25 ml) | | Normal | 1.75 - 3 tbsp (25 - 45 ml) | 1.75 tbsp (25 ml) | 1 - 1.75 tbsp (15 - 25 ml) | | Speed60® | 1.75 tbsp (25 ml) | 1 - 1.75 tbsp (15 - 25 ml) | 1 tbsp (15 ml) | | Rinse | none | none | none |

    Adding detergent

  • If the detergent dispenser 92 is
  • still closed, actuate the locking bar 9 to open it. Note: Make sure the detergent dispenser is dry and clear of detergent residue.
  • Pour detergent into the dry
  • detergent dispenser 92 only. Add detergent. Do not overfill the detergent dispenser. When using detergent tabs, lay them such that they do not come in contact with the cover, insert a detergent tab flat, not on its side. Note: Do not place detergent tabs or utensils in the detergent tab tray 1B. Place tabs or other detergent forms directly in the detergent dispenser 92. Dosage: see manufacturer's instructions on the packaging.
  • Close the lid by placing the finger
  • on the lid as shown. Slide the lid closed and press down firmly until it clicks. The detergent dispenser will open automatically at the ideal time for the set cycle. The powder or liquid detergent is distributed in the appliance and is dissolved, detergent tabs will fall into the detergent tab tray 1B where it dissolves during the cycle. Tip: If the dishware is only lightly soiled, slightly less than the indicated amount of detergent is usually adequate.

Dishwasher Cycles 26 / Dishwasher Cycles

    Dishwasher Cycles

Note: The Energy Guide label was based on the Normal soil sensing cycle as follows: The unit was tested without any rinse aid (liquid) in the rinse aid dispenser 9*. A single dose of detergent was inserted into the detergent dispenser 92, with no detergent being used in the prewash. The unit was not subjected to truncated testing per the definitions in the test procedure. We recommend that dish loads such as the one in the energy certification test have the rack position set in the highest position.

Wash cycle | Recommended use | Possible wash cycle option ---|---|--- Heavy | Best for cleaning items with baked-on food or grease. These dishes would normally require soaking or hand scouring. | all Auto | Smartest cycle, with most flexible soil sensing, which is ideal for mixed dishware and food soils. | all Normal (see note at bottom of table) | Recommended for daily, regular or typical use to completely wash a full load of normally soiled dishes. | all Speed60® | Cleans freshly soiled dishes with easy to remove soils. This cycle reduces cycle time while still including drying. | Delay, Extra Dry® Rinse | Use this cycle if you need to pre-rinse dishes to avoid odors. 0 Dishwasher Cycle Options

Dishwasher Cycle Options Delay Allows you to delay the start time of your dishwasher up to 24 hours.

Half Load Can reduce water consumption when washing small, lightly soiled loads that fill approximately half of the dishwasher's capacity.

Sanitize Increases the temperatures and retains them for an extra long time to obtain a defined disinfecting performance. Continuous use of this function increases the hygiene status. This additional option is ideal for cleaning items such as chopping boards and baby bottles.

Using the Sanitize option may also improve drying. The cycle time and energy usage may be increased.

Extra Dry Used in combination with a wash cycle (except Rinse), the Extra Dry option raises the temperature and extends the drying time to further enhance drying results and provide a brilliant shine. The energy usage may be increased.

Wash Cycle Information To save energy, this dishwasher has EcoSense where the sensors in the dishwasher automatically adjust the cycle length, temperature and water changes based on the amount of food soil and the incoming water temperature. The "Smart Control" makes decisions that can cause the cycle time and water usage to adjust intermittently. Wash cycle times are based on 120°F (49° C) water supply. If your household water supply is different than 120°F (49° C), your dishwasher's cycle times may be impacted.

Note: Only sanitizing cycles have been designed to meet the requirements of Section 6 of the NSF/ANSI Standard for Residential Equipment for soil removal and sanitization efficacy. There is no intention, either directly or indirectly, to imply that all cycles have passed sanitization performance tests.

    Risk Of Injury!

To avoid risk of injury, always use caution when opening the door during or following a wash cycle as hot water or steam may escape. Do not fully open the door until water noises have stopped and steam has subsided.

Protection against unintentional operation Your dishwasher is equipped with a function that helps to prevent unintentional operation (e.g. by children). After setting the dishwasher, the dishwasher door has to be closed within 4 seconds, otherwise the operation will be paused. There will be a signal on the control panel advising you to press the Start button again and close the door. This function will be activated when: ■ pressing Start to begin a wash cycle ■ setting Delay time and pressing Start ■ opening the door while Delay time is active ■ opening the door during a wash cycle.

Note: This function cannot be deactivated.

Operating the touch buttons Buttons are sensitive and should be touched gently. Avoid any grease or food particles resting on the buttons as they could activate the dishwasher. Wiping and cleaning can also activate the dishwasher. For best results, use bare, clean hands when touching the buttons. To clean the touch buttons wipe them with a dry or slightly damp cloth.

AquaSensor The AquaSensor is an optical measuring device which measures the cleanliness of the rinse water. The AquaSensor is used according to the wash cycle. If the AquaSensor is active, "clean" rinse water can be transferred to the next rinse and water consumption can be reduced by 0.8–1.5 gal (3–6 liters). If the rinse water is not yet clear, the water is drained and is replaced with fresh water. In the automatic wash cycles the temperature and running time can also be adjusted to the degree of soiling.

    2 Care and Maintenance

Care and Maintenance A regular inspection and maintenance of your machine will help to prevent faults. This saves time and prevents future problems.

    Overall condition of the dishwasher

    Notice

    ■ Never use a steam cleaner to clean your dishwasher. The manufacturer is not liable for any resulting damage. ■ Regularly wipe the front of the appliance with a damp cloth - water and a small amount of liquid soap is adequate. Do not use sponges as they could scratch the surfaces. ■ Do not use bleach-based wipes as they could damage the surface or printing. ■ Stainless steel appliances: To prevent corrosion, do not use sponges or chlorine based cleaners. Use a stainless steel polish to seal and protect the surface. Do not use chlorine based cleaners or wipes. ■ Clean the outer edges of the inside door panel regularly to remove debris that may collect from normal loading. If spots begin to appear on the stainless steel, make sure the rinse agent is full and functioning properly. ■ Clean the door seal regularly with a damp cloth to remove food particles that may collect from normal loading and cause odor. A soiled door seal may not seal properly.

    Warning

Use caution when removing parts for cleaning as some debris may be sharp.

    Filters

The Bosch® filter system is designed to prevent the need to pre-rinse normally attached food soils from your dishes. Simply scrape leftover food soils off of dishware before loading. This process will conserve time, water and the energy required to heat your household water supply.

Your dishwasher filter system is designed to filter 100% of the water entering the spray arms to provide a continuous supply of clean water to remove food soils from your dishware.

    Filter components

The filter system consists of three parts.

    Large Object Trap

Prevents objects that should not be placed in your dishwasher from damaging the dishwasher pump system or clogging your household drain.

    Page 34

    Care and Maintenance

    Cleaning intervals

The filter system 1b is designed to minimize maintenance while providing premium cleaning performance and minimum energy consumption.

Depending on use habits and water hardness, the filter system will require some maintenance to sustain premium cleaning performance.

Your filter system may need to be cleaned when:

    ■ You notice food soils remaining on the filter system or objects trapped in the Large Object Trap.

    ■ A drop in cleaning performance or a gritty film forms on the dishware.

When washing normally attached food soils that have been scraped before loading, in a household that runs the dishwasher every other day, your filter should be cleaned:

Note: Clean the filter after washing loads with large amounts of food soils or loads with a heavy starch content, like potatoes and pasta, to maintain optimal performance.

To check or clean the filter system:

  • Unscrew the Large Object Trap as illustrated and remove the entire filter system.
  • Remove any residue and clean filters by rinsing under running water. Note: do not use abrasive brushes or steel wool, etc., as they may damage the filter.
  • Reinstall the filter system in reverse sequence and lock into place by screwing the Large Object Trap until the marking arrows align.
  • B Flat Fine Filter

Prevents food particles from entering the wash chamber and directs particles toward the micro filter.

    C Micro Filter

Directs the smallest of particles to the household plumbing drain.

    Cleaning interval

    Use this setting,

3-6 times a year if you rinse before loading

4-12 times a year if you only scrape before loading

12 times a year if you have hard water

    Page 35

The warranties stated herein apply only to the first purchaser of the Product and are not transferable. Please make sure to return your registration card; while not necessary to effectuate warranty coverage, it is the best way for BSH to notify you in the unlikely event of a safety notice or product recall. How Long the Warranty Lasts BSH warrants that the Product is free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of three hundred sixty five (365) days from the date of purchase. The foregoing timeline begins to run upon the date of purchase, and shall not be stalled, tolled, extended, or suspended, for any reason whatsoever. Repair/Replace as Your Exclusive Remedy

During this warranty period, BSH or one of its authorized service providers will repair your Product without charge to you (subject to certain limitations stated herein) if your Product proves to have been manufactured with a defect in materials or workmanship. If reasonable attempts to repair the Product have been made without success, then BSH will replace your Product (upgraded models may be available to you, in the sole discretion of BSH, for an additional charge). All removed parts and components shall become the property of BSH at its sole option. All replaced and/or repaired parts shall assume the identity of the original part for purposes of this warranty and this warranty shall not be extended with respect to such parts. BSH's sole liability and responsibility hereunder is to repair manufacturer-defective Product only, using a BSH-authorized service provider during normal business hours. For safety and property damage concerns, BSH highly recommends that you do not attempt to repair the Product yourself, or use an unauthorized servicer; BSH will have no responsibility or liability for repairs or work performed by a non-authorized servicer. If you choose to have someone other than an authorized service provider work on your Product, THIS WARRANTY WILL AUTOMATICALLY BECOME NULL AND VOID. Notwithstanding the foregoing, BSH will not incur any liability, or have responsibility, for the Product if it is located in a remote area (more than 100 miles from an authorized service provider) or is reasonably inaccessible, hazardous, threatening, or treacherous locale, surroundings, or environment; in any such event, if you request, BSH would still pay for labor and parts and ship the parts to the nearest authorized service provider, but you would still be fully liable and responsible for any travel time or other special charges by the service company, assuming they agree to make the service call.

    Grounding Instructions

This equipment must be grounded to a permanent metal wiring system, or an equipment grounding conductor must be integrated into the power conductors and connected to the equipment grounding terminal or the dishwasher connection prong. See the Assembly Instructions section provided for more information on electrical requirements.

    9 Warning

    Risk of Electric Shock!

This appliance must be grounded. In case of malfunction, grounding will reduce the risk of electric shock by providing a path of least resistance to electrical current. This appliance is equipped with a cable with a grounding conductor.

Improper connection of the grounding conductor can create a risk of electric shock. In the presence of a qualified electrician, verify, if in doubt, that the appliance is properly grounded.

Normal Operation Use this dishwasher only for the specified purposes, including washing dishes and kitchen utensils indicated as dishwasher safe.

Use only detergents or rinse products recommended for a dishwasher, and keep them out of the reach of children.

    9 Caution

When loading dishes to wash: ■ identify sharp objects to prevent them from damaging the door gasket. ■ knives and other sharp utensils should be placed upright, HANDLES UP, to reduce the risk of cuts. ■ do not wash plastic items unless they are marked "dishwasher safe" or an equivalent indication. For plastic items not bearing this indication, consult the recommendations of their respective manufacturers. ■ avoid starting your dishwasher unless all panels are in place. ■ do not touch or bypass the controls and locks.

    Using Special Dishwasher Salts

Fill the salt reservoir to the maximum as soon as the salt level indicator lights up on the digital display.

  • Always fill the reservoir to the maximum immediately before turning on the appliance. This ensures immediate drainage of the salt-saturated solution, preventing the risk of corrosion in the rinse reservoir.
  • Notice

Detergent damages the water softening system! Never pour detergent into the salt dispenser.

Fill the salts to the maximum as follows:

  • Remove the screw cap from the dispenser 1Z.
  • Fill the dispenser with water (this operation is required only during the first startup of the appliance).
  • Add salt as illustrated (do not use table salt, salt tablets, or salt intended for whole-house water softeners).
  • Water is drained.

For more information about purchasing dishwasher salts, please contact customer service (1-800-944-2904).

    Using Salt-Loaded Detergents

    Salt-Loaded Detergent

If you use a salt-loaded detergent, special salts are not required if the water hardness does not exceed 375 ppm (37 °fH, 21 °dH, 26 °Clarke, 3.7 mmol/l). If the water hardness exceeds 375 ppm, salts must be used.

Turning Off the Low Salt Level Indicator/Water Softening System

Turning Off the Water Softening System

If the use of salt-containing detergents compromises the operation of the low salt level indicator on the digital display8, you can turn off the low salt level indicator.

Proceed as described in "Adjusting the Water Softening System" and set the value to •:‹‹. The water softening system and salt filling indicator are now activated.

    Dishwasher-Safe Materials

Note: Before first use of your dishwasher, review the information in this section. Some items cannot be washed in the dishwasher and must be hand washed; others must be loaded in a special way.

    Recommended

Aluminum Anodized and colored aluminum may discolor over time. Minerals in water can dull or spot aluminum. Generally, they can be removed using a steel wool pad dampened with soap.

China, Crystal, Stoneware Some hand-painted utensils may discolor or stain. Hand wash these utensils. Position delicate glassware so it will not tip over or contact other utensils during the wash cycle.

Glass Milk glass may discolor or become yellowed.

Non-stick Coatings Apply a light coat of vegetable oil to non-stick surfaces after drying.

Plastics Make sure plastic items are dishwasher safe.

Stainless Steel, Sterling Silver, and Silverplate Load these items so they do not contact other metals, the stainless steel dishwasher tub walls, or the inner door.

    Not Recommended

Acrylic Crazing or small cracks may occur on acrylic.

Items Assembled with Adhesive Adhesives used to bond materials such as plastic, wood, bone, steel, copper, tin, etc. may lose their bonding strength.

    Bone-Handled Utensils Handles may separate.

Iron Iron will rust. Hand wash and dry immediately.

Non-Tableware Items Your dishwasher is intended for cleaning standard dishes and kitchen items only.

Pewter, Brass, Bronze These items will tarnish. Hand wash and dry immediately.

Tin Tin may spot. Hand wash and dry immediately.

Wood Wood bowls and utensils, as well as utensils with wood handles may crack, warp, and lose their luster.

    Loading the Baskets

For best results, follow these instructions when loading dishes:

    ■ Items with light food residue buildup do not need to be pre-washed.

    ■ Remove all food particles, bones, toothpicks, and excess grease.

    ■ Pre-wash items soiled by burnt, cooked, or starchy materials.

    ■ Load dishes in the dishwasher baskets so that the inside walls of bowls, pots, and pans face the spray arms.

    ■ Avoid nesting and contact points between dishes.

    ■ Separate items made of different metals. Make sure not to block the spray arms.

    ■ Wash only dishes and kitchen items marked as dishwasher safe. Refer to the Dishwasher Safe Materials section for more information on suitable dishes.

    Notice

To avoid damaging the dishwasher, do not load paper items, plastic bags, packaging materials, or any item other than normal dishes, tableware, or kitchen utensils that are dishwasher safe.

    Loading the Upper Basket

Make sure items do not extend below the basket bottoms and do not block the spray arms.

Note: When inserting the upper basket into the dishwasher, push it until it contacts the rear wall of the wash tub. This allows the upper basket spray arm to connect to the water supply at the rear of the wash tub. Do not push the baskets using the door.

    Loading the Lower Basket

Place large items in the lower basket. Load pots, pans, and bowls upside down. Do not block the ventilation holes with large baking sheets. Load these items on the right side of the dishwasher.

    Loading the Utensil Basket

Knives and sharp utensils must be placed with handles up, spoons and forks with handles down. If bulky or irregularly shaped objects are loaded in the utensil basket, make sure they do not pile up.

    9 Warning

    Risk of Injury!

The points and sharp edges of knives and other cutting utensils can cause serious injuries. When loading, the tips of knives and other sharp utensils must be turned downward. Children should not use or play near knives and sharp utensils.

    Long Utensil Baskets

Note: The utensil basket cover can also be folded down to leave the basket open.

This dishwasher is equipped with a silverware drawer that should meet most of your loading needs for this type of object. However, if you are washing without a silverware drawer or if you have too much silverware, a silverware basket is also included.

When loading the silverware basket, avoid excessive contact points and nesting of utensils (e.g., one spoon nested inside another).

To do this, close the silverware basket covers and insert each utensil into each individual hole, as illustrated.

    Page 66

    Unloading the Dishwasher

When unloading the dishwasher, to prevent water from dripping onto dry dishes, empty the lower basket first. Then unload the silverware basket followed by the upper basket and the third basket (if equipped).

Note: Dishes are more likely to chip when unloaded before they have cooled.

    Adjusting Basket Height

If needed, the height of the upper basket can be adjusted to free up more space for large utensils in both the upper and lower baskets.

Place large plates with a maximum diameter of 34 cm (13.4 in.) in the lower basket as illustrated.

    RackMatic®

The height of the upper basket can be adjusted to 3 levels to create more space.

  • Pull the upper basket out of the dishwasher until it stops.
  • To lower the basket, push the RackMatic® lever inward.

    Detergent

Use only detergent specially designed for dishwashers. For best results, use powder dishwasher detergent or detergent tablets.

    Notice

    To avoid damaging the dishwasher:

    ■ Avoid using hand dishwashing detergents in your dishwasher. ■ Do not use too much detergent if the water used is soft. Using an excessive amount of detergent with soft water can scratch glassware and fine china.

This dishwasher requires less water than others, and consequently, less detergent. With cold water, 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of detergent will be sufficient for cleaning. The detergent dispenser has graduation marks corresponding to 1 tablespoon (15 ml) and 1.75 tablespoons (25 ml). 3 tablespoons (45 ml) of detergent will completely fill the detergent dispenser.

Note: If you are unsure of your water hardness, use 15 ml of detergent. If necessary, add the minimum amount needed for spotless cleaning of your dishes.

Use the reference lines on the detergent dispenser as an aid in measuring the recommended amount of detergent in the table below.

    | Wash Cycle | Hard Water / Heavy Soil | Medium Water Hardness / Medium Soil | Soft Water / Light Soil | |---|---|---|---| | Heavy | 3 tbsp (45 ml) | 3 tbsp (45 ml) | 1.75 to 3 tbsp (25 to 45 ml) | | Auto | 1.75 to 3 tbsp (25 to 45 ml) | 1.75 tbsp (25 ml) | 1 to 1.75 tbsp (15 to 25 ml) | | Normal | 1.75 to 3 tbsp (25 to 45 ml) | 1.75 tbsp (25 ml) | 1 to 1.75 tbsp (15 to 25 ml) | | Speed60MC | 1.75 tbsp (25 ml) | 1 to 1.75 tbsp (15 to 25 ml) | 1 tbsp (15 ml) | | Rinse | None | None | None |

When using detergent tablets, position them so they do not contact the cover. Insert them flat, not on their side.

Note: Do not place detergent tablets in the detergent compartment 1B. Place tablets or other forms of detergent directly into the detergent dispenser 92.

Dosage: see the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging.

  • Close the cover by placing your
  • finger on the cover as illustrated. Slide the cover to close and press it firmly until you hear a click.

The detergent dispenser will open automatically at the appropriate time for the selected cycle. Liquid or powder detergent is dispersed into the appliance and dissolved; detergent tablets drop into the detergent compartment 1B where they dissolve throughout the cycle.

    Dishwasher Cycles

Tip: If dishes are lightly soiled, a quantity of detergent slightly less than the recommended amount is sufficient.

    Dishwasher Cycles

Note: The Energy Guide label is based on the Normal soil level detection cycle as follows: the unit was tested with an empty rinse aid dispenser (liquid) 9*. A single dose of detergent was introduced into the detergent dispenser 92, with no detergent used in the pre-wash cycle. The appliance was not subjected to a truncated test process as defined in the test procedure. We recommend, for dishloads such as those described in the energy performance certification test, that the basket be placed in the highest position.

Cleaning Cycle | Recommended Usage | Possible Cleaning Cycle Option ---|---|--- Heavy | Ideal for cleaning dishes soiled by cooked foods or grease. They generally require soaking time or hand scrubbing. | All Auto | The most intelligent cycle, with the most flexible soil detection, ideal for mixed dishes and soiled by food. | All Normal (see note at bottom of table) | Recommended for daily, regular or typical use for complete washing of a full load of normally soiled dishes. | All Speed60 | Cleans freshly soiled and easy-to-clean dishes. This cycle has a reduced duration, but still includes a drying cycle. | Delay, Extra Dry Rinse | Use this cycle if you want to pre-rinse your dishes to avoid odors. Place unrinsed dishes in the dishwasher and select the Rinse cycle. Uses less water than manual washing and very low power. | Delay

Note: For optimal performance with minimal energy consumption, it is recommended to disable all available options and settings except the Auto Power Off option - set to "Auto power off" on page 77.

    Page 73

    Dishwasher Cycle Options

Delay Allows you to delay the start of your dishwasher up to 24 hours.

Half Load Can reduce water consumption when cleaning small dishes with light soil, filling approximately half the dishwasher capacity.

Sanitize This function increases temperatures and maintains them for an extended period to achieve preset sanitation performance. Continuous use of this function improves hygiene levels. This additional option is ideal for washing items such as cutting boards and baby bottles.

This option can also improve drying. This could extend the cycle and increase energy consumption.

Extra Dry Used in conjunction with a cleaning cycle (with the exception of rinse), the Extra Dry option increases temperature and extends drying time for better results and a brighter finish. This could increase energy consumption.

Wash Cycle Information To save energy, this dishwasher features an EcoSense system in which dishwasher sensors automatically adjust variations in cycle length, temperature, and water based on food soil level and incoming water temperature. Decisions made by the "Intelligent Control" can cause intermittent adjustment of the time and water used for the cycle. Wash cycle times are established based on water supply temperature of 120°F (49°C). If your home's water supply temperature is other than 120°F (49°C), your dishwasher's cycle times may be affected.

    Starting Your Dishwasher

    75

    1 Starting Your Dishwasher

    Starting Your Dishwasher

Note: With hidden functions, the door must be opened before changing settings and closed once settings are complete.

    Warning

    Risk of Injury!

To avoid risk of injury, always be careful when opening the door during or after a wash cycle as hot water or steam discharge may occur. Do not fully open the door until water sounds have stopped and steam has dissipated.

    Protection Against Unintended Operation

Your dishwasher is equipped with a function that helps prevent unintended use (for example by children).

After setting the dishwasher, the door must be closed within 4 seconds or the operation will be interrupted. A signal will then appear on the control panel, prompting you to press the Start button again and close the door.

This function activates when: ■ you press Start to begin a wash cycle ■ you set Delayed Start and press Start ■ you open the door while Delayed Start is engaged ■ you open the door during a wash cycle

Note: It is not possible to deactivate this function.

    Using Touch Buttons

The buttons are sensitive and should be touched lightly. Prevent grease or food particles from depositing on the buttons, as this may activate the dishwasher.

Wiping and cleaning may also activate the dishwasher. For optimal performance, touch buttons with clean, bare hands.

To clean the touch buttons, wipe them with a dry or slightly damp cloth.

    AquaSensor

AquaSensor is an optical measuring tool that evaluates the cleanliness of rinse water.

AquaSensor is used depending on the wash cycle. If AquaSensor is activated, "clean" rinse water can be reused for the next rinse and water consumption can be reduced by 0.8 to 1.5 gallons (3 to 6 liters). If rinse water is not yet clean, it is drained and replaced with fresh water. For automatic wash cycles, temperature and cycle duration can also be adjusted based on the degree of soiling.

    2 Care and Maintenance

Care and Maintenance Regular inspection and maintenance of your appliance will help prevent potential breakdowns. This saves you time and prevents new problems.

    General Condition of the Dishwasher

    Notice

    ■ Never use a steam cleaner to wash your dishwasher. The manufacturer will not be responsible for any damage caused.

    ■ Wipe the front of the appliance regularly with a slightly damp cloth (it is important to use water and a small amount of liquid soap). Avoid using sponges, as they could scratch the surfaces.

    ■ Do not use bleach-based wipes, as they could damage the surface or printing.

    ■ Stainless steel appliances: to prevent corrosion, do not use sponges or chlorine-based detergents. Use a stainless steel polish product to seal and protect the surface. Do not use chlorine-based cleaners or wipes.

    ■ Regularly clean the outer edges of the inner door panel to remove residue deposited during normal loading. If stains appear on stainless steel, make sure the rinse aid is filled and working properly.

    ■ Regularly clean the door seal with a slightly damp cloth to remove food particles deposited during normal loading that can cause odors. A soiled door seal may prevent proper door locking.

    Warning

Exercise caution when disassembling parts for cleaning, as some debris may be sharp.

    Filters

The Bosch® filter system is designed to eliminate the need for pre-cleaning stubborn food residue from your dishes. Simply scrape the dishes to remove food residue before loading. This process saves time, water, and energy needed to heat your home's water supply.

Your dishwasher's filtration system is designed to filter 100% of the water entering the spray arms, ensuring a continuous supply of clean water needed to remove food residue from your dishes.

    3 Troubleshooting

    Troubleshooting

Dishwashers may occasionally experience problems that are not related to a malfunction of the dishwasher. The following information may help you resolve a dishwasher-related problem without the need to call a professional.

Problem | Cause | Solution ---|---|--- The dishwasher will not start | The door may not be properly latched. | Close the door completely until it clicks into place. | The unit may not be powered on. | Press the main power switch to turn it on. | Unit not reset or previous cycle incomplete. | Reset the unit. See "Canceling a Cycle (Reset)" on page 78 | Delayed start is enabled. | Reset the delayed start. See "Delayed Start" on page 76 | Power supply to the dishwasher has been interrupted or a fuse has blown. | Check the circuit breaker. | The door was probably closed without a cycle being selected first. | Select a cycle and close the door. | Water supply is probably turned off. | Check and restore water supply. The cycle does not continue after the door is opened and closed during a cycle. | The door was open for more than 4 seconds after a cycle began. | Press the Start button again. The display will not light up | A fuse may have blown or the circuit breaker has tripped. | Check the fuse or circuit breaker box and replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker if necessary. | Door not closed or locked. Note: For models with controls located on the top of the door, the display only lights up when the door is open and the controls are visible. | Make sure the door is properly closed and fully locked.

Touchpad buttons are not activating easily or are activating without being touched

  • Optional feature that may or may not be included with your dishwasher.
  • Water or other liquids on the surface.

Cleaning the face with a damp cloth beforehand can cause unintended activation of functions. Clean the front face with a soft, dry cloth. If you must use a damp cloth for cleaning, dry immediately. Never pour water on the controls.

    Touchpad buttons not activated properly.

Press the center of the touchpad button with the flat area of your fingertip. A signal will sound to indicate that the selection has been made. Light touching of the buttons should work.

Note: A preset delay alerts the user against performing multiple actions simultaneously after accidentally passing your hand (or cleaning cloth) over the control panel.
